Stay creative
Make shooting the same thing interesting
Geneva is situated in a beautiful part of the world with the clear blue water of the lake reflecting the sky where the Alps and the Jura mountains provide a scenic backdrop. If you imagine Geneva what picture do you conjure up?
Is it the city’s iconic jet d’eau or could it be the ‘broken chair’ in the Places des Nations? Or is it the flags fluttering in the breeze outside the home of the United Nations?
It’s just a short drive for me to Geneva city centre where I take most of my street photos.
As I shoot here regularly I have to stop myself from falling into the trap of going into autopilot mode and taking the same shots time and time again.
When I go out on a street photo walk I need to challenge myself to look for new interpretations of the same places. I look at the same attractions or streets but with a creative eye. I search for different angles or try add something new such as slow shutter speed or change to a shallow depth of field.
When you look through my pictures you may not recognise they are even taken in Geneva at all as they could have been shot anywhere, in any town or city. However, sometimes, I want to demonstrate a sense of place.
As an example if I took a photo of someone with an umbrella it might seem ordinary but with the backdrop of the jet d’eau all of a sudden there’s a sense of place that adds interest to the shot.
The photos I present here are all pictures taken in Geneva but in some way I’ve worked hard to be creative and present them in an original way.
What’s important to me is to stay creative and avoid taking the same old photos on autopilot and churning out similar images time and again just because it’s worked for me in the past.
Please take your time to look through this small selection of photos presented below and I hope you enjoy them…
