St. Emillion

It’s a full day’s drive to the Île de Ré, (see previous blog post for La Flotte) and a long day on the road to make the journey in one go. I wanted to break up the trip with an overnight stay in the heart of the wine making region of Bordeaux and enjoy the evening in the medieval cité of St Emillion.

St Emillion

After I checked in to the hotel I headed out to explore St Emillion with its narrow cobbled stone streets steeped in history where I could only imagine how it was hundreds of years ago.

As I sat in the little square, under the monolithic church, and sipped a glass of wine, I had some important things to consider, such as should I use my Leica M6? And if so what film stock should I use? Decisions, decisions!!!

As you know, as a rule, I’m a black and white photographer but in this instance I took the plunge, stepped out of my comfort zone, and elected to use the Harman Phoenix 200 colour film.

On the Sunday morning, after a coffee and croissant I went out to further explore this medieval little town. The weather was warm and cloudy with grey skies and the film delivered an interesting look that was completely different from any other colour film stock that I’ve used in the past.

I was very happy with the photos but I’ll let you make up your minds as to whether you like this style or not.

Check out the small selection of photos below.
